GADOLINIUM----MR CONTRAST AGENT

Q All are true about Gd DTPA contrast except

a.chelated to DTPA which allows safe renal excretion
b.dose is approx. 0.2mg/kg body weight
c.does not generally cross BBB
d.produce low signal on T1 and high signal on T2

 ANS====d

FACT ABOUT GADOLINIUM
  •  a heavy metal element having paramagnetic property
  •  chelated to DTPA which allows safe renal excretion,
  •  used as MR contrast agent .
  • approx.dose is 0.2mg/kg body weight,
  • does not generally cross BBB
  • mainly positive enhancers that reduce the T1 and T2 relaxation times and increase tissue signal intensity on T1-weighted MR images and have almost no effect on T2-weighted images
  • enhance lesions lacking BBB,
  • avoided in <6moths of age
  • may cause  nephrogenic systemic fibrosis in patients with renal insufficiency
  • Contraindications for its use are  cardiac pacemaker or permanent pacemakers leads,intracranial aneurysm clip,chochlear prostheses etc
